Terms of use
The terms for using this site and its resources.
These terms apply to everyone who uses airmedsafety.org, including the Accident Database, Evidence Library, Regulatory Record, Research Questions, Research Opportunities, Learning Network, and every form on the site. By using the site, you accept these terms and the Privacy and Data Use page. If you do not accept them, please do not use the site.
Who runs this site
The Air Medical Safety Network (AMSN) is a volunteer-led initiative. It is not yet incorporated and is actively registering as a nonprofit organization. Until that registration is complete, AMSN is not a separate legal entity. When it is complete, these terms and any permissions granted under them pass to the new organization.
AMSN is independent. It is not part of the NTSB, the FAA, any university, or any professional association, and it does not speak for them.
If you accept these terms for an organization, such as when you register a program on the For Programs page, you confirm that you have authority to do so.
Who may use the site
Anyone may read the public pages. You must be 18 or older to submit a form or request access to the Accident Database.
Accident Database access
Access is personal. Each approved user receives a personal link. Do not share or forward your link, and do not let anyone else use your access. Access is granted for the use you described when you registered. If you think someone else has used your access, email database@airmedsafety.org.
Acceptable use
When you use the site, please do not:
- break any law or regulation
- try to reach records, pages, or systems you have not been given access to
- copy the Accident Database by hand or with software, or work around its access controls
- use automated tools to collect content from the site, or send traffic that slows or disrupts it
- upload harmful code, or test the site's security without written permission
- use names or contact details found on the site to send marketing
- present anything from the site as more current, complete, or authoritative than it is, or as endorsed by AMSN
Reusing what you find here
The site exists to support research, safety, and education. You may use what you find here for that work, with these limits.
- Accident Database. Use it for research, safety, and educational purposes only. Do not redistribute the records, the research coding, or any copy of the database. You may publish your own findings, figures, and summary statistics with a citation. Reusing a large part of the records, or building a dataset or product on them, needs written permission. Ask through the dataset request on the Accident Database page.
- Evidence Library. Entries are bibliographic records and links. The publications belong to their authors and publishers, and AMSN does not host or distribute copies.
- Regulatory Record. Entries summarize public sources. Cite the primary source when you rely on one.
- Learning briefs and posted questions. You may share them with credit to AMSN and a link to the page.
How to cite
Cite the version you used and the date you accessed it. The Accident Database changes with each update, so a citation without dates cannot be checked later. The Accident Database page shows a suggested citation in this form.
Griffin R. AMSN Accident Database, built from NTSB CAROL data. Version [date]. Air Medical Safety Network. https://airmedsafety.org/accident-file/. Accessed [date].
If you filter, recode, or combine the data, say so, and do not present your version as AMSN's. Do not suggest that AMSN reviewed or endorsed your work unless it has agreed to that in writing.
About the research coding
Some Accident Database fields come from research coding by Russell Griffin, PhD, MBA. These fields are not part of the NTSB record and are not NTSB findings. They are research classifications used to study patterns across many events.
The coding is not a determination or opinion about the cause of any single event. It does not assign fault or liability to any person or organization. Errors are possible. Do not use the coding, or anything else on this site, as the basis for a decision about a specific flight, aircraft, crew, or patient.
Not a reporting system
AMSN is not a confidential or protected safety reporting system. It is not part of an ASAP, FOQA, or any government reporting program, and submissions here do not carry the protections those programs provide. Report specific events through your own program's safety reporting process.
What you submit
When you submit a question, lesson, comment, correction, suggestion, or registration, you:
- confirm that you have the right to share it and that it is accurate as far as you know
- give AMSN permission, without payment, to store, review, edit, de-identify, and publish it as the form and the Privacy and Data Use page describe
- agree not to include patient information, protected health information, or details that identify a person, aircraft, or program beyond what the form asks for
AMSN decides what to publish and may decline or remove any submission.
Names and logos
Air Medical Safety Network™, AMSN™, and the AMSN logo are trademarks of AMSN. The name, logo, site design, and original content belong to AMSN. Do not use the name or logo in a way that suggests sponsorship, partnership, or endorsement without written permission. Content from other sources, such as NTSB records and published research, belongs to its owners.
No warranty
The site and everything on it are provided "as is" and "as available." AMSN makes no warranty of any kind, express or implied, including warranties of accuracy, completeness, currency, merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement. The resources on this site are compiled from public records and volunteer work, and they will contain gaps and errors. AMSN does not promise that the site will always be available or free of errors. You use the site at your own risk.
Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, AMSN and its volunteers, directors, contributors, and partners are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for any loss of data, profits, or use, that arise from your use of the site or your reliance on anything in it. This applies even if AMSN was told such damages were possible. It continues to apply after you stop using the site.
Indemnification
You agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless AMSN and its volunteers, directors, contributors, and partners from claims, losses, damages, and expenses, including reasonable attorney fees, that arise from your use of the site, your submissions, or your breach of these terms. AMSN will tell you promptly about any claim it asks you to cover.
Suspension and termination
AMSN may suspend or end your access to any part of the site, including the Accident Database, if you break these terms, if your use no longer matches what you described, or if AMSN stops offering a resource. Ending access takes effect the next time you load a protected page.
You may stop using the site at any time. You may also ask AMSN to end your access or remove your information, as the Privacy and Data Use page describes. The sections on reuse, citation, research coding, warranty, liability, indemnification, and governing law continue to apply after access ends.
Changes to these terms
AMSN may update these terms by posting a new version on this page with a new date. If a change is significant, AMSN will post a notice on the site. Using the site after a change means you accept the updated terms.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Texas, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules. Any dispute about these terms or the site will be brought in the state or federal courts located in Texas.
General
- If any part of these terms cannot be enforced, the rest remains in effect.
- Not enforcing a provision once does not waive it.
- You may not transfer your rights under these terms. AMSN may transfer its rights to the nonprofit organization described above, or to a successor that continues its work.
- These terms and the Privacy and Data Use page are the full agreement about the site, except where a separate written agreement, such as a dataset agreement, says otherwise.
