Accessibility

Accessibility at the Air Medical Safety Network.

We want everyone to be able to use the network's resources. That includes people who use a keyboard, a screen reader, screen magnification, or voice control.

Our standard

We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at Level AA. WCAG is the international standard for web accessibility. Accessibility is ongoing work, and we review the site every six months.

Interactive tools stay interactive

The site's tools are built to be explored. Filters, charts, timelines, and the Accident Database all work with a keyboard. Charts have text summaries or data tables for screen readers. Tooltips open on hover and on focus, and close with Escape.

Where the site stands

The site partially conforms with WCAG 2.2 Level AA. Partially conforms means some parts of the content do not fully meet the standard yet. The known limitations are listed below. Our conformance report gives the result for each WCAG criterion.

Known limitations

  • 2.5.8 Target Size (Minimum) (Partially Supports). Links, buttons, and form controls are at least 24 by 24 pixels or have enough space around them. Exception: the year bars in the Evidence Library tile on the home page are about 19 pixels wide and 3 pixels apart, and each opens the library filtered to that year. No control of the required size on the home page does the same thing.
  • Links to journal articles and other outside sites go to content we do not control.
  • Forms use Google reCAPTCHA to block spam. Google provides the challenge, including its audio option.
  • We have not yet tested the site with screen reader users. This is planned for the next review.

How we test

  • Automated testing of every in-scope page with axe-core 4.14, using the WCAG 2.0, 2.1, and 2.2 Level A and AA rule sets, in Chrome at 1280 pixels wide.
  • Keyboard-only testing of every interactive component, including the Accident Database with its data loaded.
  • Reflow testing at 320 CSS pixels wide.
  • Text spacing testing with the WCAG 1.4.12 spacing values applied.
  • Contrast testing of text, focus indicators, and form field boundaries.
  • Target size measurement of links, buttons, and form controls.
  • Review of page code for labels, roles, states, focus handling, and status messages.
  • Screen reader testing has not yet been done. It is planned for the next review.
